Domain Investors: Know your market
By Bruce Clement
As we all speak English, New Zealand, Canada, The UK and India are all basically the same, and even Australia and the US are reasonably similar. Right? Wrong! When I first chose to make a small investment in .UK domain names I couldn't believe how many seemingly valuable names weren't registered. The problem is that I hadn't fully grasped the subtle differences between New Zealand English and British English. As an example, I have a few "flatting" related names and only discovered after registering them that in the UK what I call flatting is known as “Flatshare” ... needless to say the good ones in that group are gone. I even had the effrontery to call my .uk domain portfolio "Great British Domains" When I found that name to be free, I should have smelled a rat as the British, of course, would have named it something like "United Kingdom Domains" If you decide you want to pay good money to play in a foreign country's domain space, make sure you actually understand the market you're getting into.
