Gastric flu and the illusion of free will

By Bruce Clement

While we like to think of them being largely separate, I've just had a reminder of how closely our bodies and our minds are connected.

Yesterday morning I woke 1/2 an hour before the alarm went off needing to urgently take care of one of the less pleasant parts of the morning ritual. Normally if I'm awake at that time I'll just stay awake, and surf the web for a bit, but this time I couldn't seem to focus and decided to head back to bed get an extra 1/2 hour sleep.

When I did wake up, I felt fuzzy & couldn't concentrate on the things I normally do while preparing for my day. I headed off to work and realised that there was definitely something wrong with the digestive tract as it was doing its best to clear itself. More importantly I simply could not concentrate on work, so I called a cab and came home.

Luckily, unlike most people in Auckland, New Zealand, I only work about 10 minutes drive from home, and the taxi only just made it in time, but make it, it did, so I was spared public embarrassment.

From 10AM until 7AM today I slept. Not continuously, as during the day I was waking every hour or so but I was pretty much asleep. Sometimes I slept lightly, sometimes deeply, but sleep is what I did.

Whenever I woke up I'd get up and have some water, but the thought of food, hot drinks or even fruit juice was repulsive to me.

Compared to my normal way of thinking and being this was an unusual way to be. Normally I have no difficulty concentrating, but yesterday I couldn't. Nor could I even think about getting in fresh food for the weekend or any of the other rituals of life.

Obviously by body needed the rest to take care of fighting off the illness I had, what surprised me was how my conscious mind went so completely over to adapting to support that.
