George Washington on the Democrats

In 1798, US President George Washington wrote in a letter to James McHenry, You could as soon scrub the blackamore white, as to change the principles of a profest Democrat; and that he will leave nothing unattempted to overturn the Government of this Country. (Spelling as in the original) Two hundred and ten years later, a "blackamore" is about to occupy the office of which Washington was the first incumbent, an act that would have been unthinkable at the time. It's interesting to muse over which George would have considered worse, Obama's race, or his party affiliations. As slave owners went, Washington was concerned about the condition of his slaves and as an old man Washington expressed a desire to not be a slave owner any more. He even provided in his will for the emancipation his own slaves at his wife's death. What do you think?
