Maori Party of Aotearoa, New Zealand

The Maori party was formed before the 2005 election after Maori leaders had become disillusioned with the Labour Party. The Foreshore and Seabed Act that placed beaches and sea floor in public ownership was the last straw that led to the party's formation. The purpose of the party is to seek the best possible conditions for the Maori minority of New Zealand. In the 2005 general election, they won most of the Maori seats, and during the current parliament has constantly sought to improve the lot of Maori. Because they are seen as an effective voice for Maori, in the 2008 election they are expected to retain most or all of the seats they won in 2005 and will put up a strong challenge in the remaining Maori seat.
