My most embarassing moment
By Bruce Clement
What was your most embarrassing moment? Mine was nearly 30 years ago. One night in the late 1970s, when I was eighteen or nineteen, I ate some dodgy takeaway chicken. The next day I was paying for my mistake with my alimentary canal trying to clear itself as fast as it could. Convinced this was more than the usual, I went to my doctor's and he described what I had as "the skitters" ... hardly an up-to-date diagnosis, even for then, but Dr Mule always seemed to be about 90, so I just took it. He wrote a prescription for something he said would lock me up and told me to go home and sleep it off. Dr Mule's office was on Queen Street, Auckland's main shopping street, and I decided to get the prescription filled before heading home so I started walking up the street looking for a pharmacy when suddenly I knew I had to vomit again. I only had time to step off the pavement and let fly between some parked cars. A kindly old gentleman came up to me and asked if I was OK. I thanked him & explained that I was just going to get some drugs I needed ... meaning the prescription, but I've occasionally remembered the event and wondered what he thought I was planning to get ... and yes, I did look a bit like a hippy in those days.
