National Party of New Zealand

The New Zealand National party is the second "old party" in the New Zealand parliament. Originally a coalition of a number of centrist and right wing parties formed to oppose the first Labour government in the 1930s, National has moved to the left and is now a marginally right-of-centre. On current polling (October 2008) they will either be the largest or second largest party in the next parliament and as it will not form a coalition with Labour will either be the major party in government or the opposition. The current leader of the National Party is John Key who was a successful businessman before entering politics. If National becomes the government he will become the Prime Minister.
