New Zealand First Party

By Bruce Clement

New Zealand First was originally formed before the introduction of Mixed Member Proportional (MMP) voting when Winston Peters defected from the National Party. For several years it limped along until MMP gave it the balance of power during the first parliament elected under that system.

When Jim Bolger was replaced as Prime Minister, New Zealand First left the coalition government, unfortunately for Winston several of his MPs defected to the government and it survived until the election.

New Zealand First survived the next election, but with a vastly reduced representation, and has slowly been regaining ground ever since.

Although it purports to be between National and Labour those parties are almost indistinguishable to most electors and it is difficult for New Zealand First to have a unique selling proposition and many people cynically call it "Winston First".

In October 2008 New Zealand First is polling at 3%, which is under the 5% required to be in parliament without winning an electorate seat, but given past performance will probably increase its percentage in the closing stage of the election and retain some seats in the November 2008 election. As National has expressed disdain for working with New Zealand First, it is probably best considered a natural coalition partner for Labour.
