New Zealand Labour Party
By Bruce Clement
The New Zealand Labour party is the oldest party represented in the Parliament of New Zealand. They have been in power for the last nine years, mostly as a minority government with "supply and confidence" agreements with minority parties. Labour was originally a left wing party with a belief in the ownership of the means of production and distribution by the workers, but over time this has slowly been lost and they are currently fractionally left of centre. The current leader of the party is Prime Minister Helen Clark. Based on current polling and the political history of New Zealand they will almost certainly be one of the two largest parties in the next parliament, the other being National. Because of historical animosities, it is unlikely that these two parties will form an alliance and so the next government will be either Labour led, or National led with Labour as the main opposition party.
