Online Dating
By Bruce Clement
Online dating has a very bad reputation, unfortunately in many cases this is deserved, but I believe this is a reflection on the way the services are run, not the concept. The theory is good. Online is a safe way to "meet" people, discover if you and they share interests and have similar outlook on life before meeting. The practice often fails badly. First it is easier online than in real life for fantasists to play little games with your head & theirs. Married, or otherwise attached, people pretending to be single will waste your time, either trying to set up an affair, or just pretending to be interested. Then there are commercial scams and real sickos. Most dating sites are not interested in weeding these people out, they are a major source of revenue for them. Perhaps if they get a lot of complaints they might do something, but don't expect them to be active in it. Don't despair too much though, it can work. Tessa and I have been together for over three years and we met through an online dating site. In Aotearoa / New Zealand, where I live there is an excellent service called NZ Dating. What makes it good is that it isn't a strict dating site, but a friendship and dating site. The distinction is important, people who are genuinely looking for friends are there too. Another thing that makes it useful is that people on the site arrange events. Group breakfasts, brunches, family picnics, and parties. In the smaller towns, there aren't many of these events, but in the cities such as Auckland where we live, there are several to choose between every weekend. Because of the friendship component of the site, there are couples as well as singles and a good mix of people looking for friendship and those "looking for love". This makes these events less of a meat market than a straightforward singles night. If you live outside New Zealand, NZ Dating is only really for New Zealanders, but have a look at the services available in your country and see if you can find a similar program.
