Rolls-Royce or Hyundai? A tale of Flash web design

By Bruce Clement

When you design a web site, do you want to be a Rolls-Royce, or a Hyundai?

I run a number of web directories, and I was re-reviewing some sites I'd previously listed today when I fired up the link to Hynundai Motor's New Zealand site.

I was presented by a page with no useful information except a counter telling me it was loading flash. It took over a minute to load, with no ability to bypass. Out of interest I wondered what the site would look like with no flash so I looked at the html, only to discover that without flash it would refuse to talk to me at all.

Once again using my inquiring mind I had a look at another motor related site, Rolls-Royce ... OK, not exactly a direct competitor for Hyundai, but at least in the same industry.

The Rolls-Royce site had flash too, but only in the top left corner, the rest of it is well done html and came up very fast. There were functional links to the rest of the site ... and I didn't need flash at all to navigate.

If you're designing a web site, or having one built for you, consider that Rolls-Royce don't require flash only. Surely there is a message in that.
