The ACT Party (New Zealand)
By Bruce Clement
Surprisingly to many, as it has always presented itself as a doctrinaire Liberal party, ACT was originally a break-away from the Labour Party. ACT is an acronym for the Association of Consumers and Taxpayers and was founded by Sir Roger Douglas, and Richard Prebble both of whom were formerly senior ministers in David Lange's cabinet. ACT stands for free enterprise and personal responsibility in financial matters, unfortunately for them it has also advocated socialist conservatism in social matters including harsher treatment of criminals, including the perpetrators of victimless crimes. This has alienated many economic liberals who are also social liberals without attracting social conservatives of a more left wing persuasion. ACT has been a member of every parliament since the introduction of the Mixed Member Proportional (MMP) system although in the 2005 election it only survived as Rodney Hyde took the Epsom electorate in Auckland. On current October 2008 polling, ACT will still not exceed the 5% threshold and will need to win the Epsom again to keep it's two seats in parliament.
